We are looking to recruit an Assistant Stormwater Engineer to support projects that reduce flood risk, manage surface water drainage, design sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), and comply with the regulatory framework across England.


Job Summary

As an Assistant Stormwater Engineer, you will support senior engineering staff in planning, designing, analysing, and implementing stormwater and drainage infrastructure. Your role will involve technical design, modelling, preparing reports and drawings, site investigations, and ensuring compliance with UK legislation, standards and best practices in stormwater management.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and modelling stormwater drainage systems and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) for new and redevelopment projects.

  • Support preparation of Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) and drainage / surface water management plans.

  • Carry out hydrologic and hydraulic modelling (peak flows, flow routing, runoff, pipe capacity, detention/retention structures).

  • Produce engineering drawings, profiles, cross‑sections, specifications, and details for stormwater drainage and SuDS features (e.g. swales, permeable paving, detention ponds, attenuation basins).

  • Prepare calculations for stormwater flows, sizes of pipes, culverts, channels, infiltration, runoff coefficients etc.

  • Assist in preparing documentation for planning submissions, regulatory consent, SUDS approval, and liaise with local authorities and regulatory bodies.

  • Undertake site visits / field investigations: topographical surveys, site constraints, assessing existing drainage infrastructure condition.

  • Support senior engineers in checking contractor design proposals and ensuring they meet required standards.

  • Assist with tender documentation, cost estimates, bill of quantities where required.

  • Ensure all work complies with relevant UK legislation, standards, and guidance (such as the Flood & Water Management Act, National Planning Policy Framework, UK SuDS national standards, building regulations and environmental permitting) spencerclarkegroup.co.uk+3GOV.UK+3penguinrecruitment.co.uk+3.

  • Contribute to quality assurance / quality control of designs, ensuring accuracy and adherence to technical standards.

  • Assist in liaising with multi‑disciplinary teams: civil engineers, environmental planners, GIS teams, contractors, and clients.


Qualifications & Skills

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or other relevant discipline.

  • Preferably some experience (internship, graduate work, or 1‑2 years) in drainage, flood risk, water infrastructure, or related fields.

  • Understanding of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) and stormwater regulations in England. Knowledge of recent updates to SuDS standards is a plus. GOV.UK+2GRAF UK+2

  • Proficiency in hydraulic / hydrologic modelling software (e.g. MicroDrainage, InfoDrainage, HEC‑RAS, StormCAD, or equivalent) desirable. Monster UK+2Talents by StudySmarter+2

  • Familiarity with CAD / Civil 3D or similar tools for preparation of drawings and plans.

  • Good technical report writing skills and ability to prepare specifications, calculations, and drawings.

  • Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, numerical skills.

  • Good communication skills (verbal & written), ability to liaise with stakeholders, regulatory bodies, contractors.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, under supervision, but also take initiative.

  • Valid UK driving licence is preferred (for site visits).


Working Conditions

  • Office‑based work, with regular field / site visits.

  • May require travel within England for site inspections, meetings with authorities or clients.

  • Standard working hours, with occasional overtime depending on project deadlines.

  • Use of protective equipment and adherence to Health & Safety standards on site.
